The Colac Vets had fifteen starters for their Monthly Medal which was brought forward
one week due to no racing next week.
Riders competed over a four lap course with riders copping strong winds and rain on the
first lap, leaving eight riders to abandon the race by the end of that lap.
The next two laps saw the weather ease up with only seven riders from the two back
marker bunches remaining.
At the start of the last lap the remaining three scratch riders were within 30 seconds of
catching the four second scratch riders.
Then an even stronger burst of wind and rain belted riders again half way around the last
lap.
With 800 metres to go, two of the scratchmen caught three of the second scratch riders by
surprise.
Scratchmen Andrew Pownceby then burst past with 600 metres to go, with Grant Oates
chasing him down and getting past him to take his third win and second monthly medal
for the year.
Heather Hamling came in a little further back in third place.

The Colac Vets had eleven riders competing in reasonably strong north westerly winds
for their club race.
Riders raced out to Beeac, then doing two 9km laps before returning to Cororooke.
The two front limit riders were caught coming back through Warrion with 11Km to go by
the four middle markers.
But within the next kilometre, two of the middle markers dropped off the pace.
This left the other two middle markers to do most of the turns of pace with the two front
markers dropping off with a few kilometres to go.
Heading into the Cororooke Hall finish, Gerard Hickey was able to get past Gary Legg to
take his second win from the last three races.
The two front markers, Peter Neal and Gavin O’Brien, held on for third and fourth place
before the scratch bunch of five came in to finish one minute and twenty seconds behind
the winner.
Michael Markham held off Steve Hamling to take fastest time.

The course headed out to Warrion and back to the Alvie school, then completing three
laps going three times up Lineen’s hill and three times up the Alvie hill before the final
one kilometre climb to the top of Red Rock.

trio when scratchman Michael Markham punctured.
The remaining two scratchmen then got within 30 seconds of second scratch with a lap to
go, but then began to lose time.
Meanwhile the remaining two middle markers had caught the two front markers on the
last lap.
Heading up the Alvie hill for the last time, Larry Nocera broke clear to then climb to the
top of Red Rock to take the win by 46 seconds over Gerard Hickey with Gary Legg a
further 16 seconds back in third place.
Heather Hamling led the second scratch trio in 34 seconds later.

stronger on the second of two laps.

The Colac Vets had eleven starters for their monthly medal.
Riders raced in tough and cold north westerly winds.
Middle marker Peter Theodore was out just after leaving the start line, with a puncture,
leaving Gary Legg on his own
The three scratchmen caught the second scratch foursome way sooner than expected, at
the 15Km mark.
Then the remaining five back markers picked up Legg with 17Km to go.
Heading home with 9Km to go, the two front markers were spotted in the distance.
On the final climb up Lineen’s hill, front marker Paul Allen told Gerard Hickey to go it
alone and try to hold off the fast finishing back markers with a tail wind.
After some surges from Heather Hamling and then Michael Markham, Hickey was
unlucky to be caught just 50 metres from the line while the back markers were sprinting.

the front markers in the distance and they were caught with 7Km to go
Heading up and over Lineen’s hill, Heather Hamling and then Steve Hamling increased
the pace setting up for a fast tail wind finish.
In the sprint to the line, Daryl Suter was rewarded for a strong ride to take the win ahead

The Colac Vets and Colac Cycling clubs held their third combined race at Cororooke.
After last weeks washed out event at Beeac, and with rain threatening the race again,
officials decided to proceed with the race.
After three scratchings, fourteen riders fronted up for the monthly medal and were very
lucky to avoid any rain fall for the duration of the race.
But did have reasonably strong cold south westerly winds to contend with.
The two Cox siblings in Sally and Nathaniel started off with a 19 minute head start on the
scratch trio and 10 minutes to the trio behind them.
The scratch trio had picked up 70 seconds on the second scratch trio when they reached
Alvie at the 20Km mark.
But when second and third scratch came together, scratch could not make up any more
ground.
Heading up Lineen’s hill before the finish, second scratch rider Heather Hamling tried to
break clear, but was unable to shake off third scratch riders Andrew Cox and Mark Flett.
In the run to the finish Cox out sprinted Hamling to take the win with Flett in third place.
Michael Markham powered away from his co markers up Lineen’s hill to take fastest
time.

Geelong rider Dave Linden powered to a solo victory in the first of the combined races being conducted by the Colac Veteran Cycling Club and Colac Amateur Cycling club.
The two clubs have decided to combine their calendars during July and August to maximise rider numbers.
The first race was well supported with 17 starters including several visiting riders. Sole limit rider Dawn Fraser (no relation) had a 25 minute start over the backmarkers and there were 4 other bunches all with groups of 3 or 4 riders.
Linden on the scratch mark with Michael Markham, Michael Papiernik and Stephane Van Der Bruggen rode away from his co-markers and rode though the field taking no prisoners.
His biggest challenge was whether he would catch Colac vet Steve Hamling who looked like he could take the win as he was still 500 metres ahead of Linden as he topped Featherstones hill on the run to the finish line in Beeac.
But Linden was fired up and managed to catch and pass Hamling metres before the finish line.
Consistent performer Neil Maurer from Geelong was third, Van Der Bruggen fourth and Tony Prytz fifth.
Both clubs were very pleased with the first race and hope it will continue.

The Colac Vets had thirteen riders for their club race competing in cool and moderately strong south westerly winds.
The middle marker bunch of four riders was down to three after a few kilometres with Tom McBroom dropping off the pace.
Meanwhile the scratch foursome were riding well in the windy conditions and looked like they may have gotten up for the win, but they lost Michael Markham coming over the first of the two hills through Alvie.
Then just after catching the second scratch trio, Tony Luppino succumbed to a bee wedged in his helmet and had to pull over.
This left the remaining two scratchmen and second scratch rider Larry Nocera falling 39 seconds short of catching the four leaders.
In the sprint for first, Gavin O’Brien led out, with Gerard Hickey coming of Gary Legg’s wheel to take the win.
Ralph Iselt then led in co marker Grant Oates to take fastest time.
